What is a contractor?
A contractor is a person that carries out a set task for their employer. You are paid for completion of your contract rather than paid for turning up to work and it's likely that you will receive little or no training on the job. Instead the employer is buying your skills for a set task. You'll also have different employement rights to those of an employee (significantly less) and you are paid upon invoicing your employer rather than receiving a regular remuneration.
You could be working for a company directly or maybe invocing a recruitment agency that will find you work. You are responsible for your own tax and are effectively self employed.
What is Temping ?
There are an enourmous amount of temporary jobs available ranging from seasonal work through to skilled positions that could end up as permanent employment for you. Normally the hiring medium is through a recruitment agency that will place you with a Employer. Although employed by he recruitment agency and paid weekly on PAYE your workplace is different with each tempoary assignemnt.
High number of recruitment agencies look for applicants for fixed contracts where you would work for either maternity cover or long term sickness cover etc. Working in a temp role is a great way to see if contracting is the right lifestyle for you, as you can register with multiple agencies to help you find work.
What is freelancing?
Becoming a freelancer is effectively the next step from being a contractor. As a freelancer you are responsible for finding your own work and do not rely on any agents or recrutiment agencies to help you.
The rewards are greater, as you are self employed - you are the boss - you can definately choose what clients you work for. It's normal for many people to start out contracting or temping and over a period of time build up a network of contacts that they can approach for repeat work.
