Temporary Employment
Temporary work or transient jobs refers to a scenario where the worker is contracted to complete and leave an employer within a certain period.
There are many types of temporary worker; Temp employees are often called "contractual" or "seasonal" or "freelance" or "temps", rural employees are typically temporarily employed for harvesting. In some examples, non permanent pro workers (particularly in the white collar fields, like law, engineering, and accounting ) even refer to themselves as "consultants." - This isn't to be confused with specialists ( like management advisors ) who are waged staff of major, respected consulting firms.
In some situations long terms temps can expect some additional benefits ( such as medical insurance ), but it is normal for a temp to have reduced employment benefits in comparison to permanent employee’s.
How Temping Agencies Work
A temporary work agency, or temp agency or temporary staffing firm finds and retains workers to place within other companies and work locations.
Where as companies that find themselves short of people due to illness, or unpredicted rise in workloads contract with the temp agency to send non permanent employees, or temps, on assignment to work onsite. it's also frequent to see part-time workers are also employed in work which has a cyclical nature that requires frequent adjustment of staffing levels.
Many Temp agencies concentrate on a specific profession or field of business,eg general business labour, accounting, medicare, technical or secretarial. Some even "specialize" in odd-jobs.
Assignments cut short
Due to the added level of communication between the employer (work location) and the temping agency and then ultimately to the agency's employee these short term roles can be miscommunicated and cancelled on an impulse. The employer is paying for a service and can decide to stop that service at any poin if they are unhappy or if circumstances change. Unlike working in a permanent job, if you are temping and have poor work quality or “walk off” site then these also are reasons why your assignment can be cut short.
Getting work through a temping agency
It’s normal for a a Temping agency to have standard sets of tests to judge the competence of the secretarial or clerical talents and even English and math skills of a candidate.
Candidates are employed based on their scores on these tests, and the information is placed into a database. Corporations or people wanting to hire somebody briefly contact the agency and describe the skill base they are looking for. Potential temps are then found in the database and contact is made with them to determine if they'd have an interest in taking the assignment.
Benefits of working for a Temp Agency :
Simple hire process : Those meeting technical needs for the kind of work are normally shortlisted faster, and with less emphasis compared to a permanent employee application. This is especially common with lower paid manual roles though quite reputedly it isn't uncommon with high talent niche roles where choice for the employer is marginal.
Flexitime ; a selection of which shifts to work ; the power to take off for weekends, vacations, holidays, private appointments, or for any reason of choice, or to work on such days for additional pay
Pay rates are usually equal or higher than the customary salary of a permanent position, this is especially true to short notice contract roles where you need to start immediately.
The likelihood of getting fired is generally lower than in an abiding position, though a customer of the agency can make a demand for the transient employee not to return, even for a minor infraction.
Downsides to temping are :
Many temp agencies don't offer any sort of benefits, for example health insurance.
Temp to perm positions often have a high turnover which is why they are agency roles.
In some temp agencies, employees are thought to be self employed independent contractors, who have got a standing like those running their own companies.
Reduced liability protection: With independent contractor status, contractors are required to carry liability insurance or else can be held accountable in a negligence lawsuit when an error results in damage. You may need your own insurance.
Absence of reference : Many recruiters don't consider work done for a temporary agency as comparable with that as full time employment enough on a resume.
