Main Content RSS Feed According to Virtualtourist.com our Wellington Beehive is ugly…

Virtual Tourist lists that the Beehive in Wellington is the worlds third most ugliest building… their description is “”a slide projector that fell on a wedding cake that fell on a waterwheel”

I find this hard to believe, that across the globe that this building is one of the worst. Our Beehive was designed by Scottish Architect Sir Basil Spencer, from a rough sketch in 1964 while dining with Sir keith Holyoake, the building was then drafted by Gibson O’connor a NZ building company.

The beehive boasts ten storeys (72 m) high and has four floors below ground. The entrance foyer’s core is decorated with marble floors, stainless steel mesh wall panels, and a translucent glass ceiling - how could this ever be possibly called ugly?

The winner of the worst building was The Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Maybe Virtualtourst has something against the Sixties?  Both were world class leading construction and architectural projects and at their time led the way for modernisation of building design.

Is the Beehive really a bad design, did us Kiwi’s get it wrong? Or are there buildings that should have got into the top ten instead?  The list of the worst buildings is posted below, discuss in our forum or by registering to this blog.

1. The Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland, USA
2. The Zizkov TV Tower in Prague, Czech Republic
3. The Beehive in Wellington, New Zealand
4. The Pompidou Centre in Paris, France
5. Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia
6. The Petrobras Headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
7. The Markel Building in Richmond, Virginia, USA
8. The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada
9. The National Library in Pristina, Kosovo
10. The Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea

Main Content RSS Feed Why become a contractor?

Becoming a Contractor effectively allows you to be your own boss. This means you make your own hours.

Wear what you want. Does your current job have a dress code? How does sitting in your pyjamas all day sound; what about just spending the day wearing your favourite pair of worn out jeans and that T-shirt from that unforgettable 1990’s rock concert!  If you are an independent agent, like a freelancer or a contractor, then you decide the dress code in most situations.

Making your own hours does not mean loafing around all day though. It does mean having the self discipline to set aside a certain amount of hours that you work each day. But, as the boss, you get to decide what those hours are. That way you can pick up the kids from school, have lunch with the wife or spouse, go to the gym during the day when it’s not so crowded, and never have to make that horrible rush-hour commute. Being a Contractor is becoming more and more popular for these obvious reasons

Being a Contractor means that you get to set your own prices for what your time is worth. There is no more waiting years for a raise that may never come, if you think the job is paying to low you have the luxury of not taking it on, or in many instances you set the rate as the client is coming to you.

Have you ever considered living somewhere else but your job and family obligations keep you stuck in the same place. Contracting can give you the freedom to take your family, if that applies to you, or just yourself and live wherever you want. So long as you’re local to where the work is you or even better, working as an IT contractor remotely from home.

As far as the rule “if it sounds too good to be true it probably is,” here is something to consider. You should not quit your day job immediately and hope to make $10,000 next month. Instead, start slow and work your way to making the money you want. If you are making the equivalent of your full time job and you have too much freelance or contracting work to do, then think about becoming a full time contractor full time and quit your permanent day job. If you work hard this process could happen very quickly.

The market for Contractors in New Zealand predicts huge growth as employers seek flexible workers without the worry of legal ties. This means if you have commercial experience you could increase your earning power and increase your potential income while having a better work life balance.

Main Content RSS Feed Welcome to Contractors.co.nz

Welcome to Contractors.co.nz the New Zealand contractor site.

With official figures released stating that “dole queue”s now exceed the 50,000 mark for the first time in many years, it seems only appropriate and at last that there is web community for Contractors, Freelancers and temporary personnel to meet online, find work and make contacts.

More and more employers look to recruit contract staff rather than empoying permanent employee’s,  in these uncertain times it is a maze for the job seeker to find work that pays well and that is secure. A pletherora of general jobsites have sprung up in New Zealand, but none focus on embracing any one group of people or skills, many job seekers find that they are constrained by time or limited internet access to go trawling through hundreds of on line jobs to find that very few are suitable.

Contractors.co.nz provides opportunities only for Contractors, Freelancers, Temp jobs and tenders. If you are looking for IT contract work to Construction contract work this is the NZ website to bookmark.
